As many blogs or news reported, an ex-Morning Musume member, Ogawa Makoto returned from New Zealand and appeared on Hello!Morning after one and half years.
While she was in New Zealand, she went to a local dance school, and also got a certification to teach children English. And she marked score
730 at TOEIC(Test of English for International Communication).TEST.
TOEIC's name is very popular among Japanese and people from some Asian countries, but many native speakers must be unfamiliar to. Then, how well can she understand English?
It has an official 'proficiently scale', and it explains the people who got over 730 are :
'capable of communicating appropriately in most situations.' (LEVEL B). And this 'LEVEL B is also the minimum requirement to promote to a middle manager in IBM Japan.
And
here are some stats.
The average score of all examinees is around
570.The average score of student majoring English is
495. The average score of all university student is
498. The average score of Office workers working in oversea department is
670.Different from TOEFL test, this test just measures how well the person can listen and read English, but it is still amazing score. It's higher than average of all university students who major English and some professionals who use English everyday at their office.
We can conclude:
The probability that Ogawa Makoto can understand what you said is higher than that of Japanese office workers in your country, and it is just as well as IBM Japan executives. Many Japanese university students study abroad recently, and there are some students who can't mark this score even after he studied two years, because he just communicated with Japanese boyfriends or girlfriends in the United States.
The result indicates, different from other lazy studens' or tarento's cases, Makoto's study in New Zealand was a kind of serious one and she worked very hard. Then now I'm VERY interested in how Akanishi-kun from KAT-TUN , who studied in Ameirca for 6 months is like.
*By the way, how the 'LEVEL A' is like?
Within his/her own realm of experience, the individual is capable of sufficient understanding and can typically respond with appropriate expressions even about topics outside his/her field of specialization. Although speech is not equivalent to that of a native speaker, the individual has a strong grasp of vocabulary, grammar, and structure and the ability to use the language relatively fluently. ... For some reasons, I know the person who barely belongs to this 'LEVEL A' well, and I can't agree enough with this definition.
"... For some reasons, I know the person who barely belongs to this 'LEVEL A' well, and I can't agree enough with this definition."
I was going to ask what level that person was, but you already answered. lol
I watched the episode of haromoni@ she appeared on, it's only a small segment with a tiny bit of talking. She only spoke one line of english ("I'm sorry I'm so sorry!" as a joke) and it was with a heavy Japanese accent, but I'm sure her english is better than my japanese so I won't make fun of it. XD I'm just glad she's back.
Oh, and all the photos I've seen of the KAT-TUN guy have been of him drunk and at parties, so I don't think his english will be so good. At least he will have learnt a lot of local slang.
Then now I'm VERY interested in how Akanishi-kun from KAT-TUN , who studied in Ameirca for 6 months is like.
LOL, this is exactly what I thought.
and I doubt that even IF he had taken the test the management will dare to announce the result to public.
@Mr.Waffle : Not local slank, pub slank =P I heard he spoke english fluently to foreigner at some pubs at Japan.
But when I heard his solo (which he said he already asked his foreigner friends to help him with grammar and pronounciation), I think it's more than enough to prove that Jin only learnt certain part in English... or EngRish? :D
Btw you got the picture? where? why I only got 1 photo (not that I'm searching for it)? XD
Now I watched the clip from youtube, too.
(search with the keyword '小川麻琴'.)
I thought her prounciation of 'I'm so sorry' is better than average Japanese. I mean it's not like 'AIMU SOU SOURII' or something. It's not surprising that she is LEVEL B.
Speaking of slangs, I remember when Sawajiri Erika who stayed in UK for months returned in April, she said to her self 'Oh, Shit!!' or something at the airport. I think at least Akanishi-kun can do it, too lol.
I'm curious what she'll do with this english, and why she choose to came back to H!P.
In some interviews, she said she wants to become like a Ru Oshiba, a Japanese comedian speaks fishy English. But I guess she wants to host a TV show for children.
Maybe there weren't any other agencies who want to hire Makoto, different from Gomaki or Kago who are going to move to avex.
Kago will go to Avex? 8O Kago is pretty lucky, she get the third chance.
Funny, suddenly I remembered a tokusatsu actor who belong to Avex now is playing in BL movie/stageplay D:
Little more details are written in the latest entry. Now a lot of actors/actress are moving to avex, and the company is becoming influencial in music industry. It's a bit scary.
Ogawa sounds good, but I guess I still hear an accent because she learned english in New Zealand. What would interest me though is if she could carry and/or follow a conversation that included slang or any other colloquial phrases. Basically, can she tell a joke in english and would the delivery be funny?
That's how I judge myself when I think about fluency, and though I am a massive failure, hopefully Mako could tell me a good dirty joke or two.
She was my favorite when I was a MxMxxx fan.
TOEIC test has questions about slangs, so I think Makoto can understand part of them. (Never dirty ones, of course lol.)
Japanese usually overestimate a person who got a certification of English such EIKEN, TOEIC, and so on. In my opinion, it is too much relying on these grade.
I have 865 of TOEIC score, and EIKEN pre-first grade, but they are no more than assuarances that their holders studied the language. In real situation, the score cannot work as degital dictionary. Practices and making mistake is a better way to learning.
I hardly know wheter Ogawa san can use English as well as other TOEIC level B holders. I wish she could be an international idol・・・.
