Ex-member of legendary heavy metal band,
Marty Friedman talked about his love for JPOP. This 45 year-old who sold 10 millions copies in the world as a member of Megadeth is now living in Japan and known as a defender of Japanese pop music. And in the short interview from a local news paper, he talked about the details of his JPOP love.
(original article from Fukushima Minyu)
http://www.minyu-net.com/newspack/2008051901000111.htmlIn this interview, he criticises American hit charts, and explains why he loves Japanese music.
"I may not like any of Top10 from American hit charts, but I like over 8 from Japanese Top10."
"I discovered JPOP in the middle of 1990s, and I liked it very much. Everybody sings the song in karaoke, so it has powerful and comprehensive melody, and it has a modulation like tsunami." He also answers the favorite songs from recent songs.
1. Polyrhythm (perfume), 2. Kodoku no mukou (Hirahara Ayaka), 3. Smile (Genki Rockts.)Amazingly, this heavy metal guitarist loves Perfume! But why?
He says has been listening to Perfume since their debut ( *I think he means their major debut in 2004, though) and explamins:
“Polyrhythm is pop song in Japan, but in America, only Progressive rock musicians can understand its irrational rhythms. Not only this interview, In another interview with Japanese musician Chikada Haruo, he is also commenting about Perfume.
"To use effector on voices sound like Joke, but this man (Nakata) has a certain musical background so it won't become jokes. Matured progress of codes, voicing like jazz, and modulation with beautiful melody. It might become like otaku, but it didn't. (after he compared with maid cosplay group's album.) “Perfume is okay, because it's fashionable." (original article)

Since Perfume became national idol last year, I'd been wondering how this attorney of Jpop looks at Perfume, but here came the answer. And his words must be ultimately true.
JPOP is interesting, but most of Japanese underrate them and think it is humiliating to expose it to the world. Especially Japanese who listen to Western music don't like the music from their own country, and disrespect them calling them
'pakuri'( imitation) of foreign music.
However, they should notice and I say, the pakuri is occurring even in the Western countries. I mean even foreign musicians imitates foreign music. The young imitates the old, that's how the pop music evolves, or how the culture is handed down to the next generation.
At least, now one foreign musician from who succeeded in the country they adore approves the quality of JPOP. Those Japanese JPOP haters should listen to JPOP again and judge them after trying to understand what he says, and what he thinks interesting.
Anyway, it seems Mr Friedman had released a book about JPOP(written in Japanese).
Iijan J-pop, Dakara boku ha nihon ni yatte kita.(that's why I came to Japan).
It's an interesting topic. I'd like to buy it when I dropped at a book store later and write its review later.
I can't seem to comment?
Sorry, for some reasons, I increased the words and remote hosts registered in the spam filter recently.
When you couldn't post the comment, please delete the words which can be regarded as spam( for example, sex-related words, and Japanese words), or, post from other proxy and try again.
It's sad I have to use this kind of filter although this is a blog for Japanese sex lovers in the world, but I hope you all understand.
But even if you speak ill of me, I don't care and won't restrict the acccess. The only ones I delete are the random spam comments and the one look like that.
So, please DO NOT be shocked and hesitate to leave comments here lol.
^ I couldn't post my comment above before I edit the filterred words.
Sorry, It looks there was a bug in the spam filter. But now you can post the one like the one like above or the example showed bellow.
(example1)
I love Morning Musume!! Don't speak ill of Morning Musume!! Perfume sucks!! Bon-Bon Blanco is asshole!! I hate Japanese hip-hop!!
(example2)
I'm a football fan!! Urawa Reds is god!! I hate this blog and I hope you'll die soon!!
Sorry again if somebody kindly tried to leave this kind of comment but couldn't.
That top one was me, lol
I've read an interview with Marty before, he used one of v-u-den's singles as an example of jpop that he loves, but that it's music you'd never hear in the West. I feel better knowing a famous musician agrees with my tastes. XD
btw, I get to see Perfume on my trip after all!!! I was browsing yahoo.jp auctions randomly and discovered they were performing on the 21st June for some Hot Stuff 30th Anniversary thing. I don't care what it's for, but I get to see Perfume again, I'm so happy!
Perfume's recent popularity kinda scares me, lol.
They are probable the only 'idol' group that I like the music without even know the members names.
lol i was another one who couldn't post a thing at all and I was cursing the filter again (well i had encountered a similar problem before last time even when I didn't insert any swear words, strangely enough) and I even emailed you about it santos, but maybe you don't check that email address any more??
Anyway I was going to say that I just saw this guy in the new issue of Nikkei Ent that I bought as well. I think it's amazing how a heavy metal guy can appreciate Perfume of all groups!!
I do agree with him that Jpop is nothing to sniff at, and I think there's probably more genres of music being produced in Japan than in Western countries, which seem to be saturated with mostly soul/R&B/ hip-hop music, at the moment. When you get blacks going over to sing enka....
I'll be waiting for your review. It'll be interesting to see how he thinks of divas like Ayumi, AKB48/Idoling and all those rock bands around nowadays!
:Mr Waffle
I thought it was yours. thanks!! If without you, I might not have noticed it forever lol.
And Perfume is now going to releae new single in July as I posted in the new entry, so you'll be able to enjoy the new song. And they may have some release events for this release!
:Tarina
That's the good point of perfume. Even the persons who think the members are ugly can enjoy the music lol.

The mail service from excite changed and it really sucks recently.(It takes minutes just to log in!!) so I don't use it, as you say. But it's still available at an emergency like this. Thanks.
*And I went to a book store today, but this book wasn't sold. I may order at Amazon or somewhere, but the review won't arrive in this week.
