Down Down, a creep around you, set a road to the deep east, Down Down, a creep around you, setting a road to the deep east, Down Down.... SEE NEW WORLD!!
Whenever I listen to LALALA feat. Wakadanna from Kato Miliyah, one question occurs to me.
'What is the man in this song doing??'
Oh, don't take me wrong. I named the male rapper Wakadanna from Shonan no kaze one of the most irritating JPOP star, but I don't mean to be mean to this big fat guy. I mean the person who appears in the lyrics of this song. And this song is the first song from her latest album 'TOKYO STAR', so whenever I listen to this album throughly, this question always agonizes me.
-- In this song, it looks the man (sung and played by Wakadanna) and woman (by Miliyah) are living together. (full Japanese lyrics)
In this lyrics, the woman starts: 昨日も深夜2時 体も疲れ果てて かまって欲しそう でも寝させて 文句ひとつ言わない君がもういじらしい (I got home at 2:00AM again, I got exhausted, You looks you have something, but leave me alone You don't complain, it's so lovely.)
She gets home at midnight, and in the next morning, she wakes up earlier than man and goes to work again while he is still sleeping. It always happens to an office worker woman working in this country, especially in Tokyo.
But what is the man doing while she is working so hard?? The man says;
(I got anxious seeing your back, “Do you left home so soon?” (skip) I love you.” All day long I see the clock playing it cool. It's still noon, I'm disappointed a little. But I can do it somehow. To make living is very hard, so I have to console you. To welcome you all in smiles when you got home, that's only the thing I can do.)
All the thing he does in this song is waking up around noon, and checking the clock out all day long. And when she gets home at midnight, he has already fell in a sleep. ....As he says, to make living is very hard, and I don't think all he can do is not only just consoling the working girlfriend...
So, first, I thought this song is a song of working woman and helpless her boyfriend. I think this happens to the men and women in the world, and sometimes women- especially, women working in sex industry keep this kind of boyfriend.
However, when we assume this song is about this kind of couple, there appear some awkward points.
Miliyah says, 君がいなくなったらって考えると 涙とまらないよ 首をかしげて不思議そうに私の涙拭いてる When I imagine the life without you, my tears won't stop. You are looking at me putting your head a little to one side, wondering why. And you wipe my tears off.
Put his head to one side?(首をかしげる?)
Of course, I'm not well informed about human being's gesture in the world, but will the man do it when you have some question when the questionee is so near? When he is alone and have some questions, he may sometimes do, just like I'm doing now. But in this situation the person whom he have something to ask is staying close enough to wipe her tears off. In that kind of situation, we have the better function called 'language'. He can ask her directly, "what's wrong?"
The man can't speak It's a kind of beautiful story that common woman falls in love with handicapped man. It's like a Korean drama. And nobody can't blame him for not working then.
The man is a gaijin NOVA teacher. Maybe the man was fired after NOVA went bankrupt, and now living in the room of his girlfriend, who used to be his student. And the 'tilting the neck' gesture is more popular among Westerners, I think. And the point Milliyah repeats in this song - 'I can't be with you forever' makes sense here. Maybe his visa will expire soon.
However, now I found another more plausible one. To sum up, the clauses to be this person in this song are :
1. The man doesn't speak. 2. His only job is to console his woman. 3. The man tilts his head to one side when he is wondering something.
The answer is, 'Miliyah's Pet Dog'
Some may say a dog doesn't tilt its head, but look at this clip.
Some may say dogs don't look at the clock and don't understand what it means, but they can if the clock rings the bell.
Who blames the dog sleeping all day long? And when assume this person is a dog, other mysterious lyrics come to be understandable.
外には敵もいるからさ 私がいつも味方でなきゃ(There are enemies outside, I have to protect you somehow.) Faithful dogs think like that and actually do it.
ずっと一緒にいられないけど(We can't stay together forever.) Unfortunately, dogs die younger than human beings.
膝で眠る 夢を見る(I dream of sleeping on your knee) Dogs can sleep on girl's knee, but It's sure Wakadanna can't.
... and so on.
So, my conclusion is : this 'LALALA' is a song of a pet dog and working woman.
There is a song from Bennie K titled 'Doggy Love', but actually, this LALALA was the true 'Doggy Love.'
[] by Tarina
LOL
I love your analysis.
so Wakadana sung her dog's parts?
why I found this kinda awkward?
btw NOVA is really bankrupt?
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
There is another evidence Wakadanna is a dog in this song. In the middle of this song (2:52-2:53) he howls like a dog. "Woooooooooo!!!". So, i think he is a dog lol.
And I'd thought NOVA has already ended, but it seems they restarted lessons with new sponsors and teachers last months.
[] by sapporo snake
Oh, intriguing analysis! lol
I often walk SUSUKINO where is one of the famous sex industrial cities. there are so many young women who have tiny dogs.
A news paper (magazin? sorry I forgot) which I read said such women love dogs as their loyal servants or substitutes for lovery boyfriends or children.
um, suggestive!
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
I also see a lot of pet shops in Ginza or Shinjuku, stood between soapland and Kyabakuda.
It's sure the people working in those shops loves pet dogs, but I heard another terrible rumor.
Kyabakura girls sometimes ask her customer to buy the dog for her at such pet shops, and the customer buy it paying 200,000 yens for her.
But she returns to the dog to the shop soon after she said good bye to the guy to get repayment. And the the same dog is displayed and sold at the pet shop again and again....
[] by sapporo snake
NO! It's a so terrible, agonizing story....Such an act is like human trafficking! (;ω;)
[] by thea
but first of all she looks really... awkward in that CD jacket. everytime i see it, im like "she srsly let that picture get printed??" lol
but very interesting analysis tho! altho it is possible that there are women who work for their men. i think there's a lot of those here in america... girl power is good, but that's just laziness on a man's part lol
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
>Sapporo Snake
Personally, I still believe this rumor. All the dogs in such shops always look tired, stressed.
(It may be because they have to be lighten up and displayed at midnight, though.)
>thea
I agree about the album's cover. I don't say she is always kawaii type like idol girls, but she looks terrible in the jacket. But young girls (her main customers) may like it, because they look like a friend of them.
And this man can be the house husband like you say, rahter to be a helpless boyfriend. But then, it's too cruel that she says 'I can't be with you forever' lol.
[] by thea
ugh i see that picture again! lol. whats with her face really D: she's like "eh..." lol
omg if i had a freeloading boyfriend or whatever like that, i would be really frustrated. i would probably kick him out too. that's just a big no no for me.
i've seen this kind of situations with my own eyes, and i will never get involved with a douchebag like that. sorry this is getting personal in my part lolol
Kotooshu, a Bulgarian sumo wrestler who won the championship last Saturday, started his official blog titled 'ちゃんこ鍋とヨーグルトって意外と合うんです(Chanko-nabe to yogurt tte igaito aundesu)' in Japanse.
This title can be trasnlated 'Chanko-nabe matches yogurt unexpectedly.' Chanko-nabe is a traditional dish cooked at Sumo gyms. It's a kind of soup like bouillabaisse , and sumo wrestlers eat it everyday. Needless to say, Yogurt is a daily and traditional dish in Bulgaria. I don't think it's good idea to eat them together, but in this title, this Ozeki from Bulgaria may imply that he could assimilate in Japanese culture easily and it was not as hard as many people imagine.
This blog is now becoming popular among Japanese. But that's might not be in the exact same way he had expected. Although its title is written in kanji and hiragana, he posts the entry in all hiragana, and many Japanese think it's 'kawaii.'(cute)
Imagine how he posted the entry. The man over 200cm and 150kg types these hiragana words with biggest palm in front of the smallest palm top. After two-hour struggle, he posted a picture, just saying 'たい2ひき', or 'おさけ'. Certainly, this gap is kawaii.
As many people starts blogging, it looks he spent all his passion on the first day and hadn't posted any since May 26th, but if he can keep it , it's sure he can become a famous blogger in Japanese blogsphere like Nakagawa Shokotan.
It's an interesting phenomenon. In ancient days, in Heian Period, when the capital of Japan was Kyoto, hiragana was the letter mainly used women, hence Japanese men thought the handwriting in hiragana from women is lovely. Now Japanese women became cleverer and read books more than average men, so the traditional usage of hiragana was lost. But when it was used by a foreign wrestler, the function of hiragana reappeared in this 21st century.
Anyway, now, here is a hint of how to become a lovely gaijin in Japan. 'Hiragana makes you lovely.'
Even when you are very good at Japanese and know tons of kanji or Japanese old saying, the usage of your perfect Japanese knowledge will just make you 'sugoi'(great) person, but not friendly person.
When you are working in Japan as an executive of Japanese company, give orders to your men in hiragana. It's sure the too much preaching in Japanese just irritate your subordinates, but simple words in hiragana make them understand that you are thinking about them. For example, when you want to order your man to revise the document he made, just say, 'だめ。やりなおし。(rejected. Revise it.)'.
Of course, it depends on the situation and your personality, but I think this strategy is effective, especially, when you are as fat as sumo wrestler. So, when you feel you are isolated by closed Japanese society, e-mail them in hiragana.
When an ancient woman fell in love with a man 1000 years ago, she sent a letter in hiragana even if she could read and write kanji perfectly. So, this approach is not guilty, but based on Japanese tradition more than modern Japanese's stupid short phone mails.
[] by Mr Waffle
haha, that's funny. I've found Japanese people praise you more when you know less. When they've asked me if I know Japanese I usually reply with "すこし” and they'll giggle and say my Japanese is good. It's kind of irritating to foreigners because we know they're just being polite (which a lot of us find uncomfortable). But with people who are totally fluent, they rarely get complimented at all. They just get treated like they're regular Japanese... which is probably what they want anyway.
I'm learning kanji now (30 down, 2000+ more to go), but I'll stick to hiragana if it will appeal to Japanese people more. lol
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
I think 2000 kanji is just as many as average high school graduate, so good luck on your studying.
I known a famous translator who is living in Japan for 30 years and writes an essay in Japanese in a perfect literary style. When he appeared in a radio show to introduce his book, he was told 'You speak Japanese well! Do you really write this book yourself?' So, I think as long as the person looks like a gaijin, "You speak Japanese well!" will be told for ever lol.
[] by LEO
wow, i'd think that something written in hiragana would be difficult to read, since it'd be harder to tell when one word begins and ends. but maybe it is different for native readers.
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
It may be difficult if without pictures, but this blog has the picture to explain the situation.
As a sequel from her 10 year anniversary project, Queen of Japanese R&B, DOUBLE released the album titled 'THE BEST COLLABORATIONS', three months after her best album '10 YEARS BEST WE R&B 1998-2008'. As its title says, in this album, we can look back another 10 year history of this the Queen of Japanese R&B.
(track list) [CD] 1. Black Diamond/ DOUBLE& Amuro Namie 2. Miss DJ!! / DJ KAORI & DOUBLE 3. Run Away Love feat. Lupe Fiasco 4. We International feat. Ak'Sent 5. Disturbance feat. TOKANA-X 6. My friend L'arperage noir mix with AI 7. Let's Get Together DOUBLE & HIRO from F.O.H 8. Should Have Tried feat. Heartsdales 9. You Got To feat. S-WORD 10. DOUBLE TROUBLE/ TASHA feat. DOUBLE 11. Platinum Date featuring DOUBLE/ZEEBRA 12. Say “I Gotta Believe”/ Del La Soul featuring Double 13. I miss You / GTS feat. DOUBLE 14. Life is Beautiful/ m-flo DOUBLE&/TOKU 15. U – KREVA REMIX featuring KICK THE CAN CREW 16. Shake (ANOTHER SQALL MIX) feat. ZEEEBRA 17. BED(DOUBLES) featuring Mummy-D from RHYMESTER and Kohei from MELLOW YELLOW 18. Nokori bi Mr Drunk Remix feat. Mummy-D, KOHEI JAPAN [DVD] 1. Black Diamond 2. Say "I Gotta believe!" 3. I Miss You
As you can see from this track list, first, we are surprised how a lot of artists collaborated with DOUBLE. Not only Japanese ones, there are some guests from oversea, like AK'Sent or Del La Soul.
And to celebrate her 10th anniversary, another Japanese R&B Queen, Amuro finally co-stared with DOUBLE, in Black Diamond. (official preview from youtube)
When I heard of this news months back, I couldn't believe. Both Amuro and Double has 10 years career, but DOUBLE is a genuine R&B artists who started from R&B from indy era, while Amuro started from idol pop and transferred to R&B. So, I'd thought they are hating each other. But actually, it looks they were respecting each other, and organized the strongest tag team for this album.
1. Black Diamond/ DOUBLE& Amuro Namie Honestly speaking, I didn't like this collaboration, 'Black Diamond' so much. Amuro fans may like this song, but it's too close to Amuro's world. It's too sophisticated or stylish like other works from Amuro, and didn't intrigued me so much like her works.
In addition , in the PV, they dance together like 'handle' from DOUBLE, but Amuro's dancing is too great and cute and , it makes DOUBLE look like a just 33 year-old obasan Amuro wannabe.
If compared with wrestling tag teams, this tag team is like Stone Cold with Triple H, or the Rock with Shawn Michaels. Amuro's too strong character is killing the charm of DOUBLE. Although it is credited this song is from 'Amuro & Double', but this title should be reviced : 'Black Diamond / Amuro Namie feat. DOUBLE.'
As a person who prefers to DOUBLE, my rating of this song is, Rating: 8.5 kote (out of 10 kote)
As you can see from this rating, I don't say this song is bad. I just had expected more.
Then, I'd like to pick up some of team I thought better than this tag team.
2. Miss DJ!! / DJ KAORI & DOUBLE Contrarily to the Amuro, DJ KAORI, Japanese DJ and singer who calls herself famous DJ person in America, is not spoiling the charm of DOUBLE. It's more close to JPOP, rahter than to be pure R&B, and I liked this song. Raitng 8.5 kote
6. My friend L'arperage noir mix with AI And like Miss DJ, this collaboration with another famous Japanese R&B singer, AI is very natural, and perfect. AI was not as popular as today when they collaborated in this song, but I wish this tag team will be re-organized soon. Rating 8.5 kote
If I compare with Wrestling tag team again, theses two tag teams are like Shawn Michaels and Triple H. So, I could enjoy them, without being irritated.
-- These tag teams are tag team who battles in the same field, R&B. Next, I'd like to review some other greatest mixed tag tems, ( both sexually, and musically. )
5. Disturbance feat. TOKONA-X TOKONA-X is a male hip-hop artist from from Nagoya. I liked his aggressive style and lyrics, and I was interested in his works. But I was shocked I found that he died in 2004. I'd like to excavate his works somehow in the nearest future. Rating: 8.5 kote
8. Should Have Tried feat. Heartsdales Heartsdales is also the duo which doesn't exist anymore. I'd known about this song from Heartsdales' album, and I still I think this song is one of masterpieces from them. The keys from Jewels and Rum from Heartsdales are low, and double's high-tone voice gives Heartsdales what they don't have. It's the ideal collaboration. Rating: 9.0 kote
9. You Got To feat. S-WORD Sometimes male additional rap music spoils the song from female singers, but it's not the case. The rap-less version of 'You Got to' is included in the DOUBLE's best album, and this rap-added version is just adding the charm of this song. S-WORD is still living Japanse hip-artist, I'd like to pay attention to his music, too. Rating: 9.0 kote
10. DOUBLE TROUBLE/ TASHA feat. DOUBLE(Rating 8.5 kote) TASHA is a female hip-hop artist from Korea. I don't understand Korean, but in this song, she raps in English, so I could enjoyed her rap. Her style is very similar to Jewels from heartsdales, and first I thought it's from Jewels. Rating 8.5 kote
11. Platinum Date featuring DOUBLE/ZEEBRA Of all collaboration works in this album, I liked this song the BEST.
Usually, ZEEBRA is another 'irritating JPOP star', annoying self-important hip-hop ozisan who appears in other JPOP artists' works and starts his boastful talk in a loud voice. For example, Grateful Days from Dragon Ash, Luxury Ride from Foxxi misQ. However, I liked his rapping and thought he is kakkoii ozisan for the first time in this song, Platinum Date.
Maybe the reason why I could love him in this song is because he doesn't talk about himself in this song. . Of course, I know he is a grandson of a famous entrepreneur and he is rich, but I don't think he is as rich as the person who has 'platinum date' with a girl in this song, the man who selects one from a lot of luxury imported cars and goes to Italy or Hong-Kong just to eat lunch or dinner. So, this lyrics sounded like a fiction to me, so I could endure his boasting in this song.
Then, this song is like a 'conceptual art' like Electro world from perfume, so I liked very much. I can select this song in my TOP40 JPOP of all time. Rating: 9.5 kote
-- Like this, although she calls herself 'Queen of R&B', she is challanging to hip-hop with many hip-hop artists in her past works in this album. So this album is becoming a good album to enjoy many styles from Japanese hip-hop. In '10 YEARS BEST', we can track the trace of 10 years of DOUBLE as R&B singer, and in this 'BEST COLLABORATION', we can see how this woman, or duo, was adventurous in the past.
And most most importantly, this album is just 3,300 yens, including DVD . It is less expensive than other JPOP albums including DVD, so I can recommend this album. At least, it is wiser choice than the singles I introduced yesterday.

im more of an amuro-chan fan so i loved the collaboration. but it's true DOUBLE looked like she's barely catching up with amuro in the dance scenes f^_^; amuro is still as glamorous tho :3
i havent heard of the other songs, but im very familiar with the Heartsdales ones. i like that song too!
what does the dvd include btw?
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
^Thanks, I forgot to write, then I updated.
I still can't believe Amuro-chan is 30 years old, in two different meanings. If compared with her longest career, 30 years old sounds to me too young. But when I judge by her looking, she looks like teenager or at least early 20s, then I have to think she is too old lol.
[] by sapporo snake
um..watching your blog, I remember her debut with her sister. 10 years passed... too fast to live...I often played their song called "shake" in my car. My friends loved Double's songs because its melody and words were very cool.
From begining, her performance was really professional. I love her lylics flavored with old Japanese expressions...
I realized a meaning of one Japanese proverb, "To continue something is to be strength of itself."
[] by Ron Smith
oh goodness...that SAM was a lucky man. Namie is beautiful and has aged wonderfully. The fact that she loves her Nintendo DS makes me wish I could marry her (too).
Should I take a break from Japan? I seem to have too many weaknesses over there. LOL...speaking of which, I am trying to visit with my girlfriend before September, if I can get over there, you wanna hang out with us santos? It'll be like old times, except I'll have a lady friend with me and won't be able to chase after someone named Ayaka. xD
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
:sapporo snake
Shake is one of the songs I like the best. And her(their) emotional lyrics reminds me of Japanese ancient literature(like old tanka) is the one of the reason why I like DOUBLE.
:Ron Smith
I used to be a man who "doesn't" drink, but after a health problem, I became a man who can't drink. So, when you go to some non-alcohol places(especially live concerts), talk to me lol.
I bought two new singles released today, but my motivation to buy them paying around 1000 yens for each one was a kind of low, low , low. I didn't like both of the titled songs from these two female artists, and I just bought thinking 'its coupling may be rather than the a-side.' Then, how were they actually like?
This is the first solo single from the vocalist from Bon-Bon Blanco, Santos Anna.
To give the conclusion first, the a-side, 'Lucky Tune' was rather than I'd expected from the preview aired as the ending of an anime show, To-love-ru.
I still don't like the too childish intro of this song, and noisy distorted guitar which spoils her voice . And as Anna answered in some interviews, she perfectly play the role of anime character in this song, and sings very cutely, like an anime character. I don't like the style, so, first 3 minutes of this song is kinda torture for an ex-Bon-Bon Blanco fan. 'It's not Anna from Bon-Bon Blanco!!'
However, this song changes dynamically from 3:00. It suddenly becomes up-tempo, rap-esque music, just like 'Yura Yura Yureru' or 'Karatto Ikou -adios amigo- from Bon-Bon Blanco. Then, anime singer Anna transforms into the great and kakkoii vocalsit, Santos Anna in this moment. I really liked this part, and it turned over my prejudice on this song, but she just keep this transformation for 12 seconds, and the songs becomes irritating one again.
The flip-side, 'Hoshino kakera', is a very, very standard JPOP idol song, which only our professor Marty Friedman may be interested in and can extract the charm of this song. In other words, It is boring for most of us.
But in this song, this 20 year-old shows us her growth as a vocalist. Especially, I was impressed by her rhyming. It seems she is interested in American hip-hop or R&B and she could learn a lot from them.
So, if I rate this single out of 10 kote, this single is 7.5 kote. The miraculous 12 seconds starts from 3:00 in Lucky Tune is enough to motivate me to repeat this song twice.
Ah, I have to admit another factor which raised my rating. ITS COVER ART IS NICE!!
(Click Read More to read the review of 'Super☆Looper')
1. Super☆Looper 2. "Sin"Kokyu 3. Can't Help But Wait – Anata ni aitakute 4. Super☆Looper(insturmental) 5. "Sin"Kokyu(instrumental)
Contrarily, even after I listened to this single over three times, I couldn't rate this song more than 6.5 kote.
It seems they tried to combine march and hip-hop in this 'Super☆Looper', but it looks to me it was just a fiasco. The consecutive drum beat spoils the lively rap from miku, and kills this song in the end.
Its b-side, "Shin" Kokyu is a song from 3rd Productions, the group of song writers which is now becoming influential in JPOP world little by little. Some may know its name via works from Aoyama Thelma.
It's still better than Super☆Looper, and just like Aoyama Thelma's works, it's a song which depicts the natural figure of Japanese women nowadays. But including Japanese cover of "Can't help But wait" from Torey Songz', I have to ask, ''Are they the songs YA-KYIM should sing?' I'd expected YA-KYIM more unique song, better version of 'Super☆Looper', the ones like Elec-Trick or Super Star.
They moved to Warner Music Japan recently and call this single 'new start', but if they going to 'Shin Kokyu' route, I think they should turn back. Even if they felt they stumbled down, they should go to Super☆Looper, or Elec-Trick route.
-- To sum up, I enjoyed these two singles somehow, but if you ask if I recommend to others who are not familiar to YA-KYIM or Bon-Bon Blanco, I'll say I won't strongly. Objectively, if you have 2560 yens to buy these singles, maybe there will be more enjoyable JPOP. Both of them are kind of 'collectors item', only the fans of them should buy and find out their charm somehow.
*If somebody is interested in Anna and her music, I'll beg him to buy 30 copies to support her of course, though.
[] by Tarina
at least she doesn't ended up as 2nd kirari, lol.
Anna got different record company?
Why they didn't just recuit BBB?
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
I don't know, I wish this record company won't recruit Bon-Bon Blanco.
Musical staffs are bad, song writers are horrible, the jacket picture is the only admirable point lol.
[] by montevi
I saw Ya-Kyim (really dumb name, if you ask me) perform about one year ago, when they were one of the openers for Melody, and their songs were so bad then too they left zero impression on me, I only remember that they were nifty at dancing. Seems like nothing has changed...
Looking forward to hearing Anna's song though, it's been ages since I'd heard a new song from her/BBB, I think her voice alone is worth at least 2 or 3 kotes to me, lol. Maybe this record company isn't so good but it's better than nothing...
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
I also watched YA-KYIM's live somewhere years ago, and they didn't left any impression, either.
But after years later, I listend to them and thought some songs are good in CD.
There are still some good songs from YA-KYIM, at least, I can listen to more than 3 times.(Elec-trick, Stand up, and so on.) I like MIKU's rapping.
Speaking of Bon-Bon Blanco's diary, although it is release date/week, the official site doesn't promote the song nor no members mention about its release in their diary.
It's strange, but it's good for Anna's carreer. I wish this 'first solo work' will become a phantom song lol.
I totally agree with Marty Friedman as to that JPOP is interesting, but I have to add, JPOP reviews from Japanese reviewers are always boring.
It is always written by a style called 'impressionistic criticism'. Many reviewers write about music, but in most examples, they are just chatting over the music, not reviewing the music itself. For example, ' I was moved by the song from this group!! When I listened their music, I was a student of Waseda...', or, 'I listened to this music with my boyfriend. It encouraged me, because... I imagine this song writer experienced the love like us.'
These asshole reviewers don't know, they are just talking about themselves, not the music itself. This problem of 'impressionistic criticism' is a common problem in Japanese art industry as a whole. (If you want to read this kind of reviews, please read a magazine called rockin' on JAPAN) And this lack of authority is one of the reason why JPOP is looked down by many Japanese.
But now, this true gaijin man in Tokyo gives a true JPOP review based on his 30 year experience as a rock musician. Amazingly, for Japanese readers, the wrote this book in Japanese, by himself. Of course, I know there is a job called editor, but his colloquial style Japanese is perfect, and it's an enjoyable read.
He starts from his autobiography. It looks he was a typical rock star wannabe, who was influenced by Elvis first and loved KISS later when he was a boy. It is a bit amazing he is a son of a government officer working at NSA (what did he thought when his son starts to work at 'megade(a)th'?') , but he mastered playing guitar by himself and organizes a band with his friend in Washington, D.C.
It was when moved to Hawaii and listend to an enka song from Yashiro Aki that he discovered JPOP first. He was shocked by its sorrowful melody, and thought of using the enka's vocal technic into his guitar play. He explains, 'The vocal melts like syrup and pour into the melody.' He was also introduced Mihara Junko, idol pop singer in 70s, and impressed by its guitar guitar riff which reminded him of progressive rock.
He kept listening JPOP since then, even after he became a member of Megadeth. He was introduced a lot of JPOP whenever he visited Japan. And he was moved by the 'No Holds Barred' style of JPOP world, people can delve into a lot of genres. And This interest on JPOP finally lead him to the origin of JPOP, and made him left from Megadeth. He also thought of moving to another group in Ameica and starts JPOP-esque music, but he thought he should pursuit true JPOP in Japan.
-- It's interesting story. The points which many critics in Japan criticizes, incoherent reference from a lot of genres and unfashionable enka, were the points which intrigued this foreign genuine musician from America.
But He explains why Japanese doesn't listen to JPOP seriously and never think it's great, with quoting Japanese old proverb. 'Japanese listen to JPOP since their childhood, so they have get accustomed to it. But I say , it is 'Toudai moto kurashi' (灯台元暗し,The foot of lighthouse is always dark). Japanese are just overlooking the important thing that lie near at hand.
Then, he starts to review many works from many Japanese artists in his own words. It's insightful review, and we can learn 'which point is great' in JPOP. It is what we can't learn from Japanese reviewers.
For example, regarding 'Life' from Nakajima Mika, he says, 'The pitches from verse and hook are quit different. It is totally irrational change of key in musical theory, and it is mysterious flow of chords. It is often seen in Komuro Tetsuya's works or Hamazaki Ayumi's works. It is like two songs are mixed in one song, and can't be seen in Western music.'
As for 'Beautiful World' from Utada Hikaru, he says: 'The range of melody that people can thought comfortable is very limited. This song is far from that point, but Utada's technic in vocal and song writing makes people think, “It's good melody."
Marty also defend JPOP regarding thress points JPOP haters criticizes.
As for 'pakuri', direct quotation from Western music, he says: 'Petit-pakuri is okay, because it is just the part is similar, and the interpretation of speed and tone is different. So, the mood of the whole song is different.'
As for English pronunciation, he explains quoting 'Tongue te Tongue' from Soul'd Out.(*1) 'The lyrics are interesting. It is very fast, but English lyrics are fishy. They don't make sense as English words, but including Japanese, they are just pursuing the comfortable sounds, strictly.'
He also defend 'avex Divas', female singers from avex whom many cynical people (*2) criticize saying they are popular just thanks to desperate promotion from the agency.
Hamasaki Ayumi is the number one of number ones of number ones. She has every good points of JPOP female singers. The great point is not only sounds, her existence is super A-class. Hamasaki Aymi must be the artist who is supported by A-class staffs like song writers or backing musicians or promoteres. But she has a stong character and make us forget about the existence of such staffs.'
As for Koda Kumi, he compares with other Japanese R&B singers like Misia and Ayaka, and he still chose her as Number 1 Diva of all female singers in Japan. Marty says she is like Bjork + Madonna in Western music. Koda's image is always sensational like Madonna, and her music is always challenging and new like Bjork. He also approves Otsuka Ai's cute voice, which we never seen in Western music.
But what kind of songs he actually loves the most? In the middle of this book, he selects 'JPOP Top 40'. I don't spoil you in details, but some of songs from Top40 amazes us, and we can learn how deep this true gaijin man in Tokyo loves JPOP world. He selects some songs some fashionable JPOP reviewers never listen to, not only Polyrhythm from Perfume. (#14)
#39 Yamamoto Sayaka 'Christmas Koushin Kyoku' #37 W 'Robo Kiss' #10 Matsuura Aya 'Momoiro Kataomoi' #7 Matsuura Aya 'Yeah! Meccha Holiday' #4 Matsuura Aya 'Nee?' #3 Sannin Matsuri 'Chu! Natsu Party'
I remember the solo album from Yamamoto Sayaka, a member of DRM(dream) sold just 699 copies in Japan, but Marty listened to this song, and approved it as #39 of JPOP all time. I can't admire him and his JPOP pursuit enough.
And he also selected a lot of songs from Tsunku, but never select any from recent works. I agree with his sense at this point, too.
-- Like this, this book from Marty Friedman is amazingly informative book. Some may say he flatters too much, but it's sure these reviews give you another view to enjoy JPOP, and you can learn a lot from this book.
Especially, it is very good that this book has an index. Many Japanese books don't have this one and we sometimes have to search by myself, wasting tons of minutes, but you don't have to worry when you want to remember what Marty says about the musician you love.
It's written in an easy spoken language, so it won't be difficult to read for foreigners who are interested in Japanese language and JPOP like him.
But after seeing his greatest reviews in Japanese, now I wish Marty will write a book to introduce JPOP in English in the future. It'll be the best guide book of JPOP for foreigners.
-- *1)Some English part in 'Tongue te Tongue' sounds okay to me, but May be he is mentioning about this part. Feeeever Beeeeever Now yougot a B-POP Freak on! Be what! G what! Gotta Kick the pumpkin pop Feeeever Beeeeever I'm just D-ROCK Digger! P what! E what! That's my pleasure
*2) I have to admit, but me too. I still think these flatter to avex divas are related to that he is now belonging to avex, though...
[Good job Marty!] by sapporo snake
Thank you for reviewing Marty's work in detail! I am really surprised at his artistic and academic writing. There are few critics in Japan who can make an index in the end of the book (><)・・・
oh, miserable!
Sometimes, foreigners are good remonstraters for Japanese (including me). Their deeds wake us up from the state of "a frog in the well." You and Marty made me moved. I have to be more logical and learn foreign languages for communicating with foreigners (I am a manservant of a hotel in sapporo).
Marty could be Louis Frois of today who wrote Historia de Iapam in portguese in the 16C!
[] by montevi
Wow!! Thanks for giving us the review in such a quick time. I am so amazed that he actually listens to Sayaka (I think I own one of the 699 copies, lol) but then again she is from Avex too.... From what you say, is Marty signed on to Avex now? maybe that's how he gets these songs....
And, I can't believe how he can put so many HP songs in the top 10, and they are the cutesy ones that I hate too, but I suppose they must have some technical quality that I cannot appreciate, lol. It would have been nice if he included thoughts about my favourite Giza artistes, but I think I might just grab this book myself if I see it to find out exactly what he says about everyone.
One thing though, did he say anything bad about anyone in particular? Like "SAS songs are way overrated" or something like that. It would be much more interesting if he actually slagged some people off!
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
:Sapporo Snake
He also writes about why he could master Japanese in such a short period in this book. Whenever he visited Japan, he tried to communicate with Japanese in Japanese, as much as much possible. It looks you are in the good environment, and honestly speaking, your English seems to me better than mine lol.
:montevi
He admires almost every JPOP, and never speaks ill of artists in these reviews.
Even when received a bit negative impression, he writes like this'
'It is good song, but I can't explain why it is good' (Takasugi Satomi)
'It is pakuri from Rainbow, but I enjoyed it, so I can forgive.' (Spitz)
Maybe when he doesn't like the song or artists, he doesn't say anything.
[] by Mr Waffle
I heard of this book yesterday, how many hellopro songs are in the top 10. Thanks for the link, I'll buy it and read what I can of it.
He really expresses what I like about jpop well. How it's willing to be different and not the same style over and over, it's so refreshing. Every new song and artist you listen to can be totally different.
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
>Every new song and artist you listen to can be totally different.
I agree, Marty says the essense JPOP is not so changing for 30 years, though. The reason why he thinks so is written in this book, I do't spoil you, so find out when you read this book lol.
[] by montevi
santos> that's disappointing! Looks like he has embraced the way of the Japanese as well ... "Do not offend anyone"... or maybe his publisher just edited all the bad comments away XD
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
Oh, I found there is only one person Marty is biting.
Sawajiri Erika (a.k.a. ERIKA). He critisies the point that she says she is influenced by Led Zeppelin, and says her music doesn't sound like Zep at all lol.
[] by thea
i see sayaka there!! he definitely loves idols lol. and it's funny how even this guy hates sawaeri lol
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
These reviews appeared serially in a music magazine, so I think it is before everyone began to hate Sawajiri that he wrote that review first, though. It looks he tried to behave like Japanese, but couldn't endure that she quotes the name of the artist he really loves.

There was a cultural anthropologist JUST LIKE this Marty guy - who's name I forget of course, who lived in Japan spending his time trying to get Japanese people to realize how great/cool/awesome their artwork and culture was. He even went as far as to buy a house that he ended up using as a museum so that it could expose Japanese people to their art.
To make a long story short, the guy eventually got bored with Japan and moved to Thailand (if I recall) because, in my opinion, Japan lost it's luster with the guy - it stopped being exotic and he moved on to the next exotic and unfamiliar country.
I see Marty in that guy. He's overrating J-Pop, particularly H!P idol music, without even realizing what's in the country that he actually came from. I actually fear that he'll eventually get bored with J-Pop and move on to, say, Korean Pop (and that Hyori Lee is SEXAY!!!), and his excuse will be that "J-Pop isn't as good as it used to be" or whatever.
I wonder if he would like - or defend, Rihanna, as much as he would Koda Kumi and the other Avex divas. IMO, Rihanna is just as good as, if not better than, Koda...for example.
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
Now I'm listening her album(good girl gone bad), and now I found 'she is as interesting as JPOP.'
I known some people won't be pleased at these words and may think it's humiliating, but I thought so, and I liked her music because it's like JPOP Marty admires. And I agree that she's better than Koda lol.
I'm also interested in how he look at this album, but then he may American Pop is now being influenced by JPOP world. In fact, he is saying the close thing in this book lol.
As some new sites reported, a scene from a famous Japanese comic, JoJo's bizarre adventure was considered to be insulting the Holy Koran. In this scene, the enemy of this series, DIO, ordered his fellows to kill human beings while he is reading the Holy Koran.
The publisher, Shuei-sha apologized for this situation and stop the circulation of the comics of Part3 of JoJo's bizarre adventure which include this scene.
As Shueisha explains, actually, this scene is not included in the original comic. In the original comic, it is just depicted as a book written in Arabic, but the staffs of animation of this series thought it is Koran because he couldn't read Arabic, so they used the image of Koran.
Not only Shueiha, but also Japanese government and the Ministry of Foreign Affair warned the manga industry to understand other religions and pay respects to them on May 23rd.
This explanation might be true, or HAS TO BE TRUE, and it's sure manga industry should be careful about religious matters, learning from this accident.
But as a JoJo fan who is reading this series for over 20 years since Part1, I don't think it is strange that this enemy, DIO reads the Holy Koran, even if it was in its original series. And importantly, even if this enemy reads the Holy Koran, I don't think it's insulting the Muslims.
Why? Well, let's begin with his short biography.
*Just in case, of course, I don't have any hostile feeling against the Holy Koran, even after the circulation of the part of the series I loved was stopped. But I just think the idea : 'The scene DIO reads Koran and kills somebody is related to the Koran itself' is not based on the right knowledge of JoJo series, or this enemy, DIO, so I can't help saying something.
DIO, or Dio Brando, was born in England, as a son of abusive alcoholic jobless father, Dario Brando. His mother died young, and he was raised up by father under his violence, but later, after his father's death, he was adopted to a noble man, George Joester. Dio was clever, and cunning, and had an ambition to take over Joester's estate instead of the main character of the part 1 of this series, sone of George, Jonathan Joester.(JoJo) But he was enough clever not to show off his real intention. First, JoJo thought he is a nasty person, but later he thought he had misunderstood him, and they became close friends.
But when Dio and Jojo became adult and became students of Hugh Hudson Univ, Dio poisoned his step father and killed him. JoJo finally noticed his conspiracy , and cornered him with the Police. Then, Dio wor a stone mask called 'Ishikamen' , which has special power to make the human beings vampires, and becomes vampire, saying,
'俺は人間をやめるぞジョジョオオオオオ'(I'll stop being a human being, Jojoooooo!!')
Then, he escaped from the burning house using the miraculous power of vampire, and disappear. Weeks later, he gathered his fellows and establishes the empire of vampire in a local village in England. JoJo mastered the special technique to kill vampires called 'hamon'. Jojo beat Dio somehow, but Dio was still alive, and attacked Jojo during his honeymoon to America. The ship Jojo went by sunk in the Atlantic Ocean, and Dio lost his body under his neck, but he took over JoJo's body and could survive.
He was sleeping in a coffin under the sea , but and 80 years later, he was discovered in the sunk ship and he resurrected in the 20th century. That's the start of Part3, which includes the scene he reads the Holy Koran. -- There is an apparent thing we can learn from this biogrpahy.
He is English vampire, not the man from Egypt . And Of course, he is not a Muslim. He is originally a clever and sophisticated person, who could enter Hugh Hudson University.
In addition, in this manga, vampires have an intellectual interest on human beings and human beings' culture, as the existence who rules them. In Part2 of this series, other vampires quote from a Chinese classic book, the Art of War from Sun Tzu.
This gap - the intelligence and cruelty, is one of the charm of DIO or other vampires in this manga, as villains. They are just reading books to understand the human beings, just to satisfy his intellectual demand, while they kill us ruthlessly. So, the Holy Koran is just one of examples, he just chose Koran because it has a lot to learn about human beings, and it is the one of the most important books to understand human beings.
And the content of the books NEVER influence the personality of vampires in this manga. There is a one famous phrase: '頂点はただ一つ' (there is only one top.) They have already had a certain policy and philosophy as the existence who rules human beings.
Of course, if some people think this scene is insulting even after reading all comics of JoJo , their feeling should be took in to the consideration. But at least, I have to say as a fan of this series: This is not the satire of terrorism , nor this scene doesn't mean the Koran makes human beings evil..
He read the Koran because he was in Egypt. If he were in Vatican, he would have read the Holy Bible. If he were in India or Thailand, he would have read sutta, and raised another kind of controversy.
It will be the second single released in this year. The title and how this song is like is still uncertain. Their album 'Game' has sold 500,000 copies, and got #1 at Oricon weekly charts, and with this single, now they challenge to the #1 of single charts.
And Natalie also brings me an interesting news.
Kreva, a former member of Kick the can crew and one of representative Japanese hip-hop, covered Perfume. http://natalie.mu/news/show/id/7271
According to this article, He started his national tour from May 21st, and in this concert, he suddenly started 'a song from Perfume', with their choreography.
This article doesn't explain which song Kreva actually copied, but I envy the audience at the venue. It seems this hip-hop guy loves this group, and especially Kashiyuka.
Since I listened the mush-up of capsule+Beastie Boys+Daft Punk, I'm very looking forward to Perfume, or Nakata Yasutaka's music meets hip-hop in the future. It won't happen, but it'll be great if this Perfume fan guy collaborates with Perfume in this new single.
-- It's amazing that they release single in such a short span, anyway. Certainly, Perfume is now becoming a national idol even Kreva loves, and 500,000 fans are waiting for the new work from this group.
But for the people who knew about their past, when they didn't release anything after Perfume complete best for 6months , this consecutive release looks too sudden.
In America or other countries, it is common to release single after the album to sell the album better, but it is not common way in Japan, and this single looks to be just a new song, not the cut from the album.
Why are they in so hurry? And why should become national idol with those desperate promotions?
-- Well, I guess the disbanding of Southern All Stars is influencing this situation. Southern All Stars, the most popular rock band in Japan announcedthat it'll stop its activity forever last Sunday. And this band belongs to the same agency as Perfume, Amuse. (article from Tokyo Graph) http://www.tokyograph.com/news/id-3216
This agency also has another major aritsts like Porno Graffitti or Fukuyama Masaharu, but it depends on SAS heavily, and when SAS announced disbanding, the price of the stock of Amuse fell by 5%.
So, now this agency is now demanding the new star, which can compensate the loss of Southern All Stars. Then, the group sold 500,000 copies, Perfume must be chosen for a new source of revenue.
It is an irony that the group who used to be neglected by the agency in indy era is now in such a position, but the business is all about.
But I wish Amuse won't be' too' desperate to promote Perfume, and won't exhaust our Messiah, Nakata. The goodness of Perfume's miracle is they could become just popular just for their music very naturally, without any supports or forcement from major label or agency, being different from AKB something. And if overloads killed Nakata's talent in the end, it's the death of this group, and the greatestloss in JPOP world.
At least, he is by far more important than Southern something to me. So, Please, do not be too desperate and please, do not kill Yasutaka. At least, Perfume's lisnters are not expecting more than something amuses us, musically.

Hellow, I've enjoyed reading your entry every day.
I totaly agree with your guess and opinion.
15 years ago, I was(…am) a fan of Nirvana and had shock from some crazy episodes of K.Cobain (Is it too much out of date?). A sudden chage often makes bad friction against status quo…like a horrible earthquake struck China.
Of course, as a fan, I long for Perfume's new song and DVD. But, I cannot help feeling evanescense. Music is not consumptive goods like AKB something. You may think it's too much languishing. I know・・・.
I remember their cute smile and airy steps at HMV event in Sapporo last September. I wish they would be natural as they are from now on…
ANYWAY Have a good weekend!
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
After I posted this entry 2 days back and thought twice, I came to think 2 singles in 6 months are not so desperate, though.
(You know, many artists from avXX releases something once a month or so.)
>I remember their cute smile and airy steps at HMV event in Sapporo last September. I wish they would be natural as they are from now on…
It's sure they can't hold such a event, so you should think you were lucky.
-- First, she explains how some of her fans, or otakus are not sensible about her policy. She had already told it to fans in a roundabout way before, but some of fans couldn't understand, so she decided to say it directly.
“Some may think it is what the artist should say, but please understand it is the situation I have to say it by myself.”
And she explains the new rule for her concert.
“Now, I'd like to forbid all the deeds what is called wota-gei. Some may say 'I don't trouble anybody and I'm selecting a right place to do wotagei.', but it is causing troubles in the end. And basically, I don't like the deed that you don't look at the stage.”
“As I've been saying for years, just doing some violent move without looking at the stage is nothing but a self-satisfaction. 'To go and become violent' or 'To go and do wota-gei' is not the feeling as 'to enjoy the live concert.'
“Sponsors overlook these behaviors because they live up the concert, but some evil persons take an advantage of this. “
“This troublesome acts are held at concerts from other arrtists. But it is just the difference between they overlook or not. Pure fans are not coming to the concert to see your weird move. “
-- It's just summary, and more translation may alive later, but... but How true words this voice actress and singer says !?
It is exactly the same idea as mine 2 years ago, when I was still a passion for idol music. I still believe wota-gei is not the correct way to enjoy the 'music', no matter how the people in the world love it. It is not the way to enjoy the music, but the way to enjoy a masochistic feeling which ocmes when they do and shout in their hearts: 'I'm otaku, look at me!!'
And I think many idols who were forced to act as idols in the past were having the exact same emotion whenever she saw otakus dancing from the stage , but for commercial reason, they have to endure them and pretend to be delighted, saying, “Ouen site kurete arigatou!!”(Thank you for your supports) in all smiles.
But now, finally, here came the idol who confessed her real intention.
Personally, I tried her 'music' couple of weeks ago coincidently, but I didn't like it, so I don't think I can go to her concert and support her. But I'll support her anti-wotagei activity in my heart. I wish this movement spread to the world and all wota-gei will disapppear from this universe.
[] by LEO
"Pure fans are not coming to the concert to see your weird move."
i laughed when i read that. it must be something really irritates her for her to say it as upfront as that.
[] by LEO
wow, i just looked at her blog and all of the entries have 0 comments on them. either she doesn't want to let otaku write comments on her blog either, or she just doesn't have many fans. if it's the second, she probably shouldn't be turning some of them away... lol
[] by Holiday
Can you describe this weird wota-gei movement? I haven't been around enough so I don't know!
[] by anti-pop
I second Holiday's comment.
Maybe you should write a (little?) post to explain what wota-gei is all about to us outsiders !
[] by Walt
Holiday,anti-pop, search "wotagei" at YouTube. There are a lot of examples there. It's good she is upfront about her feelings. It would suck if you came to her concert to listen and enjoy the show only to have to deal with guys doing their thing.
[] by montevi
LEO > her blog does not allow for comments to be added. (tadaima comment wo uketsuketeimasen) I'm sure that fans will have something to say, good or bad, if they read her post. It is highly unlikely that an artiste can hold a concert but have zero fans write anything on all her blog entries.
Personally I'm not sure what wota-geis do either that is so annoying to others so I would be interested to find out.
I had a close encounter though when i went to watch AKB48 because the otaku standing behind was shouting/shrieking so loudly all the time at his favourite girls his saliva kept landing on me!!! It totally spoilt my enjoyment of the show. I'm not sure if that could be classified as wotagei behavour??
[] by Mr Waffle
wotagei = "fan performance". It's the name given to dances/actions fans do in the crowd at idol concerts. It's pretty much restricted to the fanclub areas, so the family seats aren't bothered by it (assuming the venue has family seating, 2000 seats+ will, but smaller places might not).
I have always wanted to do a full investigation into the history of wotagei. It's an evolution of ouendan, cheer squads that were popular in Japan many years ago (I think schools still have it for sports festivals etc, a friend told me the yankees did it at the school she teaches at).
Personally, I love wotagei, as long as it doesn't bother other people. For example I think it's fine to do it in the FC seats at an idol concert because a lot of other people will be doing it too. But it's dumb to do it when in a crowd of people not interested. I don't like people who are inconsiderate of the people around them in concerts.
[] by thea
she got balls to say that to those otaku fans D:
montevi > omg got rained much?? lol. that sounded gross
[] by Gag Halfrunt
For some reason a lot of the wotagei videos on YouTube show the Hello! Project Fanclub Mexico, who obviously aim to be as much like real Japanese wota as possible (and seem to be obsessed with Miki Fujimoto), for example:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2QEAF6Jvt6o
There's also a Mexican idol group (no, really) called Yumeki♥Angels, whose handlers sent them to perform wotagei at someone else's concert:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=IG6XHYCPEPw
[] by Ron Smith
santos (and anyone who read jpm in 2006) knows how I feel about wotagei already. YES, there are some groups (such as AKB48) who embrace and arguably even encourage that kind of behavior at shows. In other cases though, it's just a bunch of assholes who don't really care about who's on stage and are just trying to put themselves over rather than the performers they [MIGHT] have come to see.
Good to finally see these comments coming from someone in Japan, but they're pretty much two years too late.
[] by montevi
thea > Unfortunately yes.... T_T An umbrella would have been useful. Moral of the story: Don't sit on the back row just in front of the otakus for an AKB show.
And about wotagei-ing, I must admit to following the rest of the audience in front of me who were doing the hand actions when I watched a dream concert last year, so I guess i must be considered a semi-culprit. XD But to me, standing up and doing those dance actions really did made the concert a lot more enjoyable and the atmosphere more "high", so I would definitely do it again if I had the chance.
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
:LEO
In the new entry, she eplains more and says she is not attacking her fans. Some fans who gather at some 'joint' concert are the ones. So, her fans, who don't do any wotageis won't get angry.
I heard a concert from a voice actress (Chihara Minori) was forbidden in some concert halls because of these wotagei lovers' wild behaviors. So, she must think she should say somthing to this sitiation.
:Holiday&anti-pop
I hate ota-gei, and it even annoys me even when I think of it, so I don't wanna post a new entry to explain them. but as Walt says, some clips from youtube may help your understanding. Gag Halfrunt has kindly posted some, but here is another one.

:Mr Waffle
Your definition is perfect. "Wotagei=fan performance." But I'll say, it's annoying fan performance!
Maybe the one just to support artists should have another name. 'fan-gei' or something.
:montevi
It's disgusting... but you went to AKB's concert, you should endure. AKB seems to have some 'girls only' concerts, so they should start 'otagei-forbidden' concert to make the most of this up-to-date trend.
:Thea
I don't think she has balls, though lol.
:Ron Smith
I'm not sure if the girls from the group you saw liked wota-gei or not, (at least, I admit they are delighted when they were supported by wota-geis), but it's sure their agency didn't like them. Then the agency should make them say like this voice actress/singer. But yeah, it's two years late...
[] by Ron Smith
hmm...I'll compare the wota-gei to something you used to like, because I actually think they have a lot in common: American pro-wrestling fans. There is a wrestling promotion named "ROH," which I guess can be considered a modern day version of the old ECW, where fans are just as much the show as the wrestlers are. Fans would come up with the most ridiculous chants, all the way to the point where the show's booker (a guy by the name of Gabe) literally had to get online and tells these fans to cut it out because it's actually ruining the show itself and hindering advancement.
That doesn't sound familiar?
That's how I see the wota-gei, I guess you could call it - especially since they got a fair amount of media attention two years ago as well. The wota became the show, it didn't really matter WHO was on stage - Hinoi, P55, B3, MoMusu - as long as it was an idol girl and potentially in Akihabara.
That's what bugged me about the fad...but what really gets me is that I was saying it in 2006, and everything people where realizing in 2006 is what I was screaming in 2004! So by 2010 everyone else will be apathetic and I'll just be rolling my eyes because I'm apathetic towards music right now! xD
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
^Whenever I try to find something similar to Japanese idol industry oversea, I also think of wrestling industry for some reasons, so it's very interesting comparison. Most of the fans enjoy wrestling, but some of the fans just enjoying the chants or wild behaviors at the stadium or gyms. Certainly, that sounds to me the same problem.
[] by Tarina
I just realize that they always use the same chant 8O
tiger blablablablablabla...
since I thought it's AKB48's chant, but looks like I'm wrong 8O
it's horrible, how can they use the same chant to every idols?
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
^That is what is called 'MIX.'
Tiger, Fiber, Cyber, Diver, Viper, Jah!! Jah!
Some kind of idol otakus say it's not otagei, but it alwasy seems to me the typical otagei which irritates me lol.
[] by Mr Waffle
I've only ever heard it used at the AKB theatre, never at a hellopro event. I dunno about other groups though. I thought it was an AKB48 wota thing only... I don't like it so much, it's too noisy. I prefer dancing around rather than shouting so much. lol
[] by gaijinheart(snts3*)
As far as I know, MIX was popular among non-Hello-project idol fans, like Chekikko or dream. Then it spreads from there, became common among avex idols (like SweetS or Paradise Something, or Hinoi team) , and arrived at AKB theatre after their disbanding.
I heard some Berryz fans or ℃-ute fans do it influenced by fans of those groups, but I'm not sure, too lol.
[] by Tarina
MIX?
in KAT-TUN's last single I think they shout "MIX!!" during the interlude.
(I'm not sure since my hearing is bad)
but is it possible that.... O.O
I hope MIX wont ever happen in H!P, they should make new chant if they want to do it so badly.
Ex-member of legendary heavy metal band, Marty Friedman talked about his love for JPOP. This 45 year-old who sold 10 millions copies in the world as a member of Megadeth is now living in Japan and known as a defender of Japanese pop music. And in the short interview from a local news paper, he talked about the details of his JPOP love.
In this interview, he criticises American hit charts, and explains why he loves Japanese music. "I may not like any of Top10 from American hit charts, but I like over 8 from Japanese Top10." "I discovered JPOP in the middle of 1990s, and I liked it very much. Everybody sings the song in karaoke, so it has powerful and comprehensive melody, and it has a modulation like tsunami."
He also answers the favorite songs from recent songs. 1. Polyrhythm (perfume), 2. Kodoku no mukou (Hirahara Ayaka), 3. Smile (Genki Rockts.)
Amazingly, this heavy metal guitarist loves Perfume! But why?
He says has been listening to Perfume since their debut ( *I think he means their major debut in 2004, though) and explamins: “Polyrhythm is pop song in Japan, but in America, only Progressive rock musicians can understand its irrational rhythms.
Not only this interview, In another interview with Japanese musician Chikada Haruo, he is also commenting about Perfume.
"To use effector on voices sound like Joke, but this man (Nakata) has a certain musical background so it won't become jokes. Matured progress of codes, voicing like jazz, and modulation with beautiful melody. It might become like otaku, but it didn't. (after he compared with maid cosplay group's album.) “Perfume is okay, because it's fashionable."
-- Since Perfume became national idol last year, I'd been wondering how this attorney of Jpop looks at Perfume, but here came the answer. And his words must be ultimately true.
JPOP is interesting, but most of Japanese underrate them and think it is humiliating to expose it to the world. Especially Japanese who listen to Western music don't like the music from their own country, and disrespect them calling them 'pakuri'( imitation) of foreign music.
However, they should notice and I say, the pakuri is occurring even in the Western countries. I mean even foreign musicians imitates foreign music. The young imitates the old, that's how the pop music evolves, or how the culture is handed down to the next generation.
At least, now one foreign musician from who succeeded in the country they adore approves the quality of JPOP. Those Japanese JPOP haters should listen to JPOP again and judge them after trying to understand what he says, and what he thinks interesting.
Anyway, it seems Mr Friedman had released a book about JPOP(written in Japanese). Iijan J-pop, Dakara boku ha nihon ni yatte kita.(that's why I came to Japan).
It's an interesting topic. I'd like to buy it when I dropped at a book store later and write its review later.

Sorry, for some reasons, I increased the words and remote hosts registered in the spam filter recently.
When you couldn't post the comment, please delete the words which can be regarded as spam( for example, sex-related words, and Japanese words), or, post from other proxy and try again.
It's sad I have to use this kind of filter although this is a blog for Japanese sex lovers in the world, but I hope you all understand.
But even if you speak ill of me, I don't care and won't restrict the acccess. The only ones I delete are the random spam comments and the one look like that.
So, please DO NOT be shocked and hesitate to leave comments here lol.

^ I couldn't post my comment above before I edit the filterred words.
Sorry, It looks there was a bug in the spam filter. But now you can post the one like the one like above or the example showed bellow.

That top one was me, lol
I've read an interview with Marty before, he used one of v-u-den's singles as an example of jpop that he loves, but that it's music you'd never hear in the West. I feel better knowing a famous musician agrees with my tastes. XD
btw, I get to see Perfume on my trip after all!!! I was browsing yahoo.jp auctions randomly and discovered they were performing on the 21st June for some Hot Stuff 30th Anniversary thing. I don't care what it's for, but I get to see Perfume again, I'm so happy!
[] by Tarina
Perfume's recent popularity kinda scares me, lol.
They are probable the only 'idol' group that I like the music without even know the members names.
[] by montevi
lol i was another one who couldn't post a thing at all and I was cursing the filter again (well i had encountered a similar problem before last time even when I didn't insert any swear words, strangely enough) and I even emailed you about it santos, but maybe you don't check that email address any more??
Anyway I was going to say that I just saw this guy in the new issue of Nikkei Ent that I bought as well. I think it's amazing how a heavy metal guy can appreciate Perfume of all groups!!
I do agree with him that Jpop is nothing to sniff at, and I think there's probably more genres of music being produced in Japan than in Western countries, which seem to be saturated with mostly soul/R&B/ hip-hop music, at the moment. When you get blacks going over to sing enka....
I'll be waiting for your review. It'll be interesting to see how he thinks of divas like Ayumi, AKB48/Idoling and all those rock bands around nowadays!

:Mr Waffle
I thought it was yours. thanks!! If without you, I might not have noticed it forever lol.
And Perfume is now going to releae new single in July as I posted in the new entry, so you'll be able to enjoy the new song. And they may have some release events for this release!
:Tarina
That's the good point of perfume. Even the persons who think the members are ugly can enjoy the music lol.
:montevi
The mail service from excite changed and it really sucks recently.(It takes minutes just to log in!!) so I don't use it, as you say. But it's still available at an emergency like this. Thanks.
*And I went to a book store today, but this book wasn't sold. I may order at Amazon or somewhere, but the review won't arrive in this week.
It is 16 years since Japanese professional soccer league J-League was organized in 1992. As far as I can remember, it is the first usage of alphabet 'J' as a kakkoii acronym of Japan. J-POP, J-Bungaku(literature), J-PHONE, J-BEEF, J-POKE... tons of ' J' was born and disappeared in these 16 years, but it seems now we witnessed another kind of 'J' from the birthplace of 'J'. J-Hooligan.
Last Saturday, at the J-LEAGUE football game between Urawa Reds(Saitama) and Gamba Osaka(Osaka) held at Saitama stadium, Gamba fans provoked Reds fans by throwing water balloons until they hit the kids fans from Urawa. Fans of both glared at each other over the fence and security guards, but when Gamba won the game by 3-2 and Gamba fans were crazed, Urafan's blew their top and locked up Gamba fans in the stadium for over 2 hours. 1,500 Gamba fans were rescued by the Police and escaped from the stadium, and Reds fans let them go after the representative of Gamba fans apologized them for the bad behavior during the game.
Fortunately, there weren't any fans from both team who died during this turmoil, but one 35 year-old Gamba fan who fell from the stand broke his leg and was taken to the hospital. (article from Japan Times.) http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/sj20080518a1.html ... Some people from the countries where football is more and fans go mad more than Japan may say, they are just 'fans' , not hooligans. But it's still amazing Japanese people can become such crazy at football game, and behave like that.
The picture taken during the game looks to be the one from other Asian countries, which are very close to Japan, especially, when their national team oppose to Japan national team for the the color of uniforms they wear.
Just as they have been doing for 2000 years or more, it seems Japanese people are still good at copying foreign products and arrange them for internal use.
Look at this picture. They even copy the hand sign of original countries!!
...However, is this the first J-Hooligan and nationalists or conservative people should lament for the degenerated moral of modern Japanese? I don't think so. To tell the truth, it's not the first turmoil caused by sports in this country.
-- 200 years ago, in 1805, Tatsugoro, who was a fire fighter belongs to a group named Megumi, and his fellows visited a sumo wrestling match held at a shrine in Shiba, Edo(Tokyo's ancient name). 200 years ago, fire fighters are exempted from sumo wrestling's ticket fee because fire fighters are heroes who protect the town made of woods and papers. So, Tatsugoro and his fellows enjoyed the show for free, but there was one friend who was not a fire fighter, so one of sumo wrestlers, Kuryu-zan blamed this friend at the entrance gate. Fire fighters got angry about the sumo wrestler's wild and rude words, but Tatsugoro paid the ticket fee, and they pulled back for a while.
After they enjoyed the sumo match and left the shrine, they went to a theater to enjoy a play. But unluckily, the sumo wrestler was also visiting the theater. Then the sumo wrestler began to yell at the fire fighters and insult them in front of the lot of audience. This time, fire fighters couldn't stand anymore.
Then, the huge battle started. Sumo Wrestlers vs. Fire Fighters. Almost all sumo wrestlers and fire fighters in Edo city joined this battle, and it confused the city for 7 hours. 34 people were arrested for this battle, and Tatsugoro and few fellows were exiled from Edo in the end.
This is an incident called 'Megumi no kenka'(め組の喧嘩, the fight of megumi). It became a motif of Kaubki known as "Kami no megumi wagou no torikumi"(神明恵和合取組) , and it is still popular even today.
Anyway, its 21th century version, in this 'Urawa no Kenka' , people didn't involve any players nor the trouble was not caused by the players, but it's sure there were people who caused a trouble with the excitement after the sports even 200 years ago.
So, don't worry. Japanese are not degenerated, nor influenced by anti-Japanese activists too much. Some of Japanese have been just stupid for 200 years. In other words Genetically, Japanese have seeds of hooligans, just as other human beings in the world do.
And you don't have to think this accident is humiliating.
In the kabuki-verison, the fact that Tatsugoro and his friend tried to cook up the bill is being cut. Instead, Tatsugoro are drawn as a pure hero who fight against the sumo wrestlers and their sponsor samurai who insulted them.
So, just like the Megumi's fight became sophisticated kabuki's theme, years later, this battle between Reds fans and Gamba fans may become a theme of a modern art, even if some of the people at the stadium were just enjoying the mimicry of Western hooligans, and thinks that they could become a true football fans, actually.
According to Sankei Sports, it turned out an ex-member of Miniska-police has become a 'OL' ('Office Lady', office worker),from last April.
This woman, Nagai Runa, 25 year-old, was a gravure idol who was famous as the 6th gen member of the TV show, 'Miniska-police' Miniska-police was a popular mid-night TV show in which girls in Police-cosplay challanges to many things without caring about upskirts, and it became a boom around 2000.
After she graduated this TV show, in 2002, she entered Rikkyo University, another university in Tokyo which belongs to 10% from the top, and studied English and American literature in Tokyo. In 2006, she graduated and began to study English language at a graduate school in London to become an international actress.
-- Strangely, although this is a kind of sad story – one ambitious girl gives up dream and starts to work as a common people – when it comes to 'gravure' world, it sounds like to me a very happy news.
How many gravure idols ended their career in the weirdest way since last year? As far as I introduced in this blog, two girls disappeared suddenly after they were forced to sleep with a producer, while other woman was arrested in Akihabara for obscenity. A girl killed herself after she was forced to become a porn actress, while another one killed her old boy boyfriend with a kitchen knife and tried to stop the blooding with an instant glue.
But now, this 25 year-old became a common people and going to work as a English-speaking Rikkyo graduate. It's not certain what kind of industry she chose, but it's sure it won't be the one like Mcjob. Job searching for excellent university students is becoming easier, so I won't be surprised even if she says she is working at Morgan Stanley or Merrill Lynch. She couldn't become an international actress as she'd been wishing, but it must be the happiest ending which belongs to 3% of all gravure idols from the top.
-- Only the matter of concern is, her past career. In the blog entry she posted just before she left the show business, she is worrying about the clips posted at youtube. When she searched on the Web with key word of her name, '永井流奈', while she felt nostalgic about the gravure pictures which she had already forgot, she was shocked by the clips at youtube, because they were the clips taken in the hardest time in her life.
She was searching for the method to delete these clips, but it seems these clips are still available at youtube, and certainly, they are shocking ones. About 10 years ago, people can enjoy this kind of clip freely on TV in Japan, and she was the casualty of this hentai-TV-show boom era.
However, I don't think she will be fired after these clips are discovered by the company she belongs to. It's the era of the Internet, so I don't think the personal department of the company didn't search her name just as she did and hired her without knowing that she was that kind of miniska police. Miniska-career is a kind of Karma she has to be burdened, but I just wish the best in her next career.

I didn't found this sad at all, I mean gravure => OL
I heard somewhere gravure is not paid higher than OL, and she has spent a lot of money and time in university, it will be such a waste if she become gravure + C/D-class actress
*and I haven't hear anything about successful international Japanese actress either*
[] by thea
it seems like she is very smart. im glad it worked out for her. she was prob trying really hard to be a well-known actress through gravure, but that's all she was able to achieve.
if u think about it maybe in the future, ex-members like hagi and keika will be successful in their careers too hehe

:Tarina
I also heard the salary of gravure idol is very low. The one ven stars in famous drama like gokusen can get 30,000 yens a month, because most of the income is spent for the promotional activities.
:Thea
I agree. I think to be an idol trains her personality. Especially, endurance for everything. They work hard, they sleep less than average girls, and can learn how to behave in adults' world from teens. (I don't mean sexual one, of course!). Their experiences and efforts will be rewarded somehow, someday.
Women are always mysterious to men. They always have some secrets we can never know.
The mystery begins at elementary school. One day, while we are still children who love Nintendo products badly, they begin to use some instruments which we are never taught how to use them, and become very nervous once a month without any reasons. Then, they stop playing Nintendo products with us, and begin to talk about the ikemen persons they love, and never look at us anymore.
The mystery continues. The part of their bodies begin to swell, and strangely, we can not overlook the hills suddenly appeared on their chest. Some of us experience the expansion of human body parts then, but apparently, it is not the same place. And the mystery occurred then are concealed under the kawaii pair of clothes they begin to use then.
And they later, when they become more cunning, they begin to camouflage them with some cotton or silicon products, and the mystery becomes deeper and deeper. Those camouflaged mysteries attract us badly, but where is the truth? Only the thing we can do is just guessing, speculating, and making believe, lonesomely, and tiresomely.
But now, one Japanese genius create the wonderful device to undercover the one of secrets of women.
By inputting the name of the girls whom you want to undercover her mystery, you can see the truth usually hidden under the annoying clothes. The color of top, area of the circle around the top, and elasticity(pururun-do) of the body part . In addition, unbelievably, it can calculate how “H”(indecent,or pervert) the person is!!
Some may not believe, but I think this device is very helpful, and credible. Let's look at an example, the best example to talk about this topic. Hosino Aki. Amazingly, through this oppai maker, we can see the truth under her mysterious boobs.
(Just in case, click read more after you confirmed you are legally okay to see some indecent pictures.)
Hoshino Aki (ほしのあき) (picture& result from oppai maker) Form: Normal Color of nipple:Pink Areola: normal Elasticity:Marshmallow H-grade: Pervert(Hentai)
It seems her double mysteries are as soft as it looks. Some Web sites had doubts that her areolas were cut by a plastic surgery, but it seems they are just normal, and delightfully, pink.
However, don't jump up to the conclusion. This result was searched with hiragana, 'ほしのあき'. Interestingly, when we use the oppai maker with Hoshino Aki in kanji, '星野亜希' we can see the quit different result.
Hoshino Aki( 星野亜希) Form: Small Color of nipple: Black Areola: normal Elasticity:Hard H-grade: nornal
LOL
I love your analysis.
so Wakadana sung her dog's parts?
why I found this kinda awkward?
btw NOVA is really bankrupt?
There is another evidence Wakadanna is a dog in this song. In the middle of this song (2:52-2:53) he howls like a dog. "Woooooooooo!!!". So, i think he is a dog lol.
And I'd thought NOVA has already ended, but it seems they restarted lessons with new sponsors and teachers last months.
NO! It's a so terrible, agonizing story....Such an act is like human trafficking! (;ω;)
but first of all she looks really... awkward in that CD jacket. everytime i see it, im like "she srsly let that picture get printed??" lol
but very interesting analysis tho! altho it is possible that there are women who work for their men. i think there's a lot of those here in america... girl power is good, but that's just laziness on a man's part lol
But then, it's too cruel that she says 'I can't be with you forever' lol.
ugh i see that picture again! lol. whats with her face really D: she's like "eh..." lol
omg if i had a freeloading boyfriend or whatever like that, i would be really frustrated. i would probably kick him out too. that's just a big no no for me.
i've seen this kind of situations with my own eyes, and i will never get involved with a douchebag like that. sorry this is getting personal in my part lolol
